Diamond Select Toys Movie Gallery Dark Knight Rises Catwoman review

Okay. This doesn’t happen often, but I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news: this one isn’t very good.

Say it ain’t so

If you’re making a statue replicating a famous actor from a film, so much of your success depends on how well you replicate the likeness of said actor. Diamond did it will with Aquaman; Koto’s Justice League Batman was a great take on Affleck. But this Selina Kyle looks like a really expensive cosplay by someone who just doesn’t look all that much like Anne Hathaway.

Usually, the sculpt on Diamond’s Galleries is superb, but even this looks like a miss to my eyes. This Catwoman just looks a bit thick compared to Hathaway in Rises, and when combined with an even bigger miss on the face—which, oddly enough, looks more like Christian Bale in lipstick—is pretty distracting. And while the likeness is a bigger issue, the paintwork on the head around the mask, the hair—it’s all very sloppily applied. I would imagine collectibles related to the Nolan trilogy sell pretty well, so I would have expected an attention to detail more consistent with the Batman and Bane Galleries that I reviewed recently.

But here’s the most disappointing part—the costume is outstanding. The texture, the gloves, the boots—it all works so well. They made so much of this thing right on the money, that it’s just sad to see them come up short on small-but-significant features.

The base is just fine. It’s not very interesting, but it’s well-executed for what it is. I kind of feel like when they go this simple, they should just go fully simple instead of clinging to the diorama theme. Why not just a simple black base?

So…should I?

I can’t recommend this one. I wish I could—the other Nolanverse Gallery stuff has been great. But unless you’re only planning on viewing your collection from 10 feet away, I can’t see how this would make you happy. It’s a shame, but it’s the truth.
