James Gunn turned 53 on Monday, and it seems the production crew of The Suicide Squad wanted to celebrate in style. When Gunn arrived at the offices he found two birthday cakes waiting for him, both of them with a King Shark theme.
The first cake features a mocked-up comic book cover with a well-known image of King Shark. The second cake is adorned with a shark fin, sound effects such as “Pow,” and an assortment of polka dots. We would imagine this is a reference to the inclusion of Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad.
While we’ve been hearing lots of information about the other members of this film’s Suicide Squad, King Shark has been a bit of an enigma. At one time there were rumors that Michael Rooker would play the role, but those were quickly denied by the actor. Since then things have been fairly quiet in regards to the monstrous villain.
These cakes could just simply be cakes. They may be a joke about the rumors. They could just be a fun thing to build a cake around. We simply don’t know. But with filming said to be starting in Sept., we imagine we’ll be hearing a lot of confirmations about long-gestating rumors soon.
Currently, Margot Robbie is rumored, but not confirmed, to return as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman looks to be returning as Flagg, and word is that Viola Davis will also reprise her role as Amanda Waller.
As to new characters, David Dastmalchian is confirmed as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior is rumored for a genderswapped Ratcatcher, and we still have no clear indication who Idris Elba is playing. A new rumor, however, points to his character having a daughter, so that narrows down the field a bit. And the final new character rumor has Benicio del Toro possibly up for the role of the film’s villain.
The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
