What’s better than one movie focusing on the Joker? What about two of them?
It’s hard to believe we now live in a world where villains can carry their own films, but it’s true. Venom was a hit for Sony Pictures, and Venom 2 is well underway now with Andy Serkis signing on to direct, and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson joining the crew. We would say that’s a definite sign that villains can carry a film without those pesky heroes getting in the way.
And on the DC side of things, Joker is shaping up to take on the festival circuit with appearances at both the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. With early tracking showing a strong opening weekend, and already some Oscar buzz, it looks as though this film could be a hit as well.
As the release date draws closer, the cast is starting to hit the promotional circuit, and that includes interviews with Total Film. It may seem a bit premature to bring it up, but with things looking up for the film, questions already turn to the possibility of a sequel. Director Todd Phillips definitely seems to be up for the idea. “One thing I will tell you: I would do anything with Joaquin, any day of the week,” said Phillips. “There’s nobody like him. If he was willing to do it, and if people show up to this movie, and Warners came to us and said, ‘You know what? If you guys could think of something…’ Well, I have a feeling that he and I could think of something pretty cool.”
We already know that the film takes place during Bruce Wayne’s childhood, so there would be years for him to run around unimpeded by Batman. But with this being an Elseworlds story, it also means that Batman may not even need to show up.
Could we be facing a world where we have a whole series of films that focus only on the Joker? It’s a different idea to be sure, and one we’re definitely down to explore.
Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4.
