Appearing on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of Ford v Ferrari, Christian Bale was asked about the upcoming Joker and Batman projects. He’s sure to be getting this a lot for the next year or two, but he seems prepared for it.

On the topic of Joker, Bale said, “Joaquin [Phoenix] is one of the best actors around, you know. And, obviously, I worked with Heath [Ledger], you know, and it’s a brave thing to follow up that performance. He always makes interesting choices. I’m dying to see it. And I wish them the best with that.”

The topic then swung over to Robert Pattinson with Entertainment Tonight Canada asking if the new Batman had reached out to him. “He hasn’t, no,” said Bale. “I think he’s a fantastic choice. He’s interesting.”

It’s easy to say that red carpet answers are always the ‘safe’ ones, but Bale is also rather well-known for speaking his mind. Having worked opposite the award-winning performance of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, however, he’s sure to be at least mildly interested in how Phoenix portrays the Clown Prince of Crime.

While it’s always nice if actors acknowledge those that came before them, is there really a need for advice? Bale did already share his thoughts on the ever-present bathroom problem with Batman costumes, so at least that is out there for Pattinson.

Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4.
