Anxious to see if Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is going to have a showdown with Robert Pattinson’s Batman? It appears you’re going to be disappointed.
Speaking with Variety on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the Joker, Phillips was asked if these versions of the two characters would meet one another. “No, definitely not,” said Phillips. “Oddly, in the states, comic books are our Shakespeare it seems, and you can do many many versions of “Hamlet. There will be many more jokers, I’m sure, in the future.”
It does feel as though we could now have multiple iterations of the Joker on the big screen. We know that Jared Leto did not appear on set for the Birds of Prey, a scene was filmed with a stand-in. This means that in the span of four months – if that scene is not cut – two different Jokers will be seen in theaters. It would seem this concept of multiple Jokers may already be getting a small test.
Could we be looking at a Batman-less version of the Joker getting his own series of movies? Phillips has said he’s open to a sequel, so anything is possible at this point. And even if they did want to involve Batman down the road, in the timeline of this movie, they have several years to go before he would show up.
It looks as though it’s going to be an interesting few months as Joker makes its way out to wider audiences and we see what Warner Bros. plans to do with this version of the Clown Prince of Crime.
Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4.
