James Gunn ‘sorting out’ the Suicide Squad casting announcement

With a table read out of the way, and having said the film is fully cast, one has to wonder where the full cast announcement is. It seems it’s coming “soon.”

A fan tweeted at James Gunn about the status of announcing the cast. Gunn’s reply was, “Sooooooooon. Sorting it out.”

We’re not quite sure what ‘sorting it out’ means, but our guess would be exactly how the announcement will be made.

At this stage, we have a mountain of rumors and speculation, but very few solid facts. Joel Kinnaman keeps saying he is returning as Flagg. Jai Courtney will tell anyone he passes in the street he’s back as Captain Boomerang. And joining the cast, David Dastmalchian has confirmed he is playing Polka-Dot Man.

As to the rumored roles, Viola Davis is said to be reprising Amanda Waller. Daniela Melchior is rumored for a genderswapped Ratcatcher. Benicio del Toro possibly up for the role of the film’s villain. Flula Borg has also reportedly been added as someone’s love interest. And the latest addition is Peter Capaldi in an unknown role.

The final two rumors are the biggest by far. Idris Elba is rumored for an unknown role. He originally had been rumored as a replacement for Will Smith as Deadshot, but that appears to have changed. A later rumor, however, points to his character having a daughter, so that narrows down the field a bit.

And the final rumor is whether or not Margot Robbie will be returning as Harley Quinn. There has been massive speculation around her involvement. While she is an extremely busy actor and producer, she is wrapping up reshoots on Birds of Prey right now. It’s not too difficult to imagine her throwing her baseball bat in her checked luggage and heading off to Atlanta for The Suicide Squad.

Shooting is rumored to begin within the next two weeks, we imagine the official casting announcement will happen before the cameras roll, so be prepared for the news to drop at any time.

The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
