When you’re working on a film in the same general genre as another film that has become the highest-grossing of all time, you have to find a way to make yourself stand out. That seems to be the approach Todd Phillips took with the upcoming Joker.
As Marvel Studios continues to seemingly eat up every dollar at the box office, it appears that Warner Bros. may be changing up its formula slightly. This, at least, was the thinking for Todd Phillips as he approached the Joker film. “You can’t beat Marvel — it’s a giant behemoth,” Phillips told ComicBook.com. “Let’s do something they can’t do.”
There are, of course, a few ways to take this comment. Not only did he craft Joker to stand on its own without connections to other films, but he also went for a hard-R rating. Yes, both Deadpool movies were rated R, but were not made by Marvel Studios and achieved that rating for very different reasons than Joker.
Could this be the future of DC films? We’ll have to wait and see how the film performs, but the indicators are looking good so far. We can’t see Warner Bros. going entirely into this realm, but it may be open to more projects in a similar vein.
