As we prepare for the release of Joker, we’re also anxiously awaiting more information on the upcoming Birds of Prey movie. We finally got a first teaser – albeit in theaters only officially – and a movie poster, there still aren’t many details as of yet.
As we draw closer to the Birds of Prey movie release, we’re finally seeing a few things pop up. Screenwriter Christina Hodson spoke with Total Film recently, and discussed a bit about how the film came together. “Margot knew she wanted to tell a ‘Harley Quinn plus girls’ story,” said Hodson. “That was kind of where she began with it. She knew she wanted a girl gang. She wanted Harley to have friends.”
In what is possibly the most surprising revelation of the brief interview is that Robbie had first spoken to Hodson about the storyline and film four years ago, pre-dating the opening of Suicide Squad in theaters. It was during these early conversations that the ‘girl gang’ that it “had naturally gravitated towards the Birds of Prey,” said Hodson. “She’s a comic-book fan. Obviously, you know, it’s not a traditional team-up. So then it was about finding fun, inventive ways of doing that. Warners were very supportive in terms of letting me go off-leash.”
Just how far ‘off-leash’ Hodson went remains to be seen, but judging by what has been seen so far, it looks as though it was pretty far.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be the first appearance of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn since Suicide Squad. She will be joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress, while Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be playing Black Canary. Rosie Perez will be playing Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain as well. And Ewan McGregor joined the cast as Gotham City villain Black Mask.
The Birds of Prey movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.
