Mary Elizabeth Winstead discusses the nature of playing the Huntress

There are more and more images of Birds of Prey finally appearing, but what we aren’t hearing yet are character descriptions. While everyone is familiar with Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad, we know virtually nothing about the versions of Huntress and Black Canary we’re about to meet.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is currently out on the promotional circuit for her upcoming movie Gemini Man, so it gives everyone a chance to ask her about Huntress. Luckily, The Wrap did just that and she shared a bit of background on what we can expect saying, “She’s kind of an odd character… She’s weird, and funny and awkward.” She went on to add, “You sort of get to tell this story of this girl who grew up training to be an assassin and didn’t ever have friends, and doesn’t know how to fit in socially, and doesn’t really know anything other than how to kill.

“We got to sort of play around with that in ways that are in ways that were both sort of sometimes disturbing and sometimes really funny,” Winstead continued. “To get to play with that kind of a character was a really great opportunity.”

While we still wait for the Birds of Prey press push to start in earnest, we’ll just have to make do with whatever DC and Warner Bros. choose to share at New York Comic Con. The plans call for new costumes and merchandise to be shown off, so it sounds as though we’ll start seeing some movement on the film’s promotion soon.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be the first appearance of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn since Suicide Squad. She will be joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress, while Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be playing Black Canary. Rosie Perez will be playing Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain as well. And Ewan McGregor joined the cast as Gotham City villain Black Mask.

The Birds of Prey movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.
