It appears that the New Gods movie won’t be the only DC project on Ava DeVernay’s plate. HBO Max has ordered a pilot for a TV adaptation of DMZ from her and Westworld executive producer Roberto Patino.
Published by Vertigo, the Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli series was set in the near future after the United States had fallen into a civil war. The island of Manhattan becomes a demilitarized zone between the two sides and becomes isolated from the rest of the world.
The series will be following a female medic who searches the island for her missing son. She becomes a symbol of hope for the people left there as she manages dealings with the gangs and militias that rule the DMZ.
DeVernay is set to direct and executive produce the pilot.
As with all pilots, we won’t know if it moves forward to series until after the executives view the final product. We’ll be keeping an eye on this for sure.
