Joker looking at $155M global debut over opening weekend

Things are looking good for Todd Phillips’ Joker over its opening weekend. The latest box office projections are showing that not only will the Joker be the Clown Prince of Crime, but he’ll also be the king of the box office.

Showings of Joker will begin as early as Wednesday in some countries, and the U.S. will see the first previews at 4pm local time. During this entire opening run, the current projections have the film placed at $155M globally with just over half of the happening domestically. Under these projections, it would make it the second-best October bow behind the opening of Venom which took in $207.4M globally.

Focusing on the U.S., Joker will open on around 4,300 screens and is projected to bring in $80M plus which will be in contention with Venom‘s October opening record of $80.25M. It will also be an October screen record with Venom currently holding the number at 4,250.

There are, however, some caveats to all of this good news. How a film does beyond its opening weekend is always the bigger question mark. While this film has a very healthy opening in its future, what happens weekend two will be the real story. Can a movie about a man’s descent into madness have any sort of box office legs? We’ll just have to wait and see how general audiences react to the film. For now, it looks like we’ll be very happy with a new top of the box office when this weekend closes out.

Tickets are on sale now, and Joker hits theaters in the U.S. on Oct. 4.
