New report suggests The Batman is going full-on Sherlock Holmes

As we draw ever closer to the start of filming for The Batman, things will start leaking out. One thing we’ve heard over and over again is how the movie will be a noir detective story, but one new rumor points to an even more classic style.

According to Thomas Polito – a leaker with a good track record – the film could be going back to the tone of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. “Small The Batman update: I hear the movie is gonna play out very much like a Sherlock Holmes story with Catwoman as Batman’s Irene Adler & Riddler as his Moriarty.” Polito added, “Reeves is also building a world similar to the animated shows & comics where all the villains are already out there.”

The villains being established isn’t much of a surprise. With the film reportedly using six members of the Rogues Gallery, there would be no way to try to cover that many origins in one film. While a villain such as Firefly – reportedly one of the villains – may not be a household name like Catwoman, an audience doesn’t need to know every nuance of a villain. Typically if you’re walking around a city with a flamethrower, most people are going to know that you want to do bad things to a city.

As the Batman continues to inch ever closer, the cast is filling out with Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, and, most recently, Jeffrey Wright finally being confirmed as Commissioner Gordon.

The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
