Fans of practical effects appear to have a new reason to rejoice. According to a recent social media post by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad is going to be filled with them.
Gunn posted a throwback video to some crowd audio looping for Guardians of the Galaxy to his Instagram account. A user replied, “Veey [sic] nice. Good to see filmmakers are still using practical effects.” Gunn replied, “There are more practical sets and effects in #TheSuicideSquad than all my other films combined!!!!”
If you aren’t familiar with the term, practical effects are any effects such as explosions, creatures, and so on, that occur in real-time on the set involving physical items. While CGI may be used to enhance them in post-production, the basis of the effect was done on set. While not essential in some cases, it always adds an air of realism to scenes that CGI just can’t seem to capture as of yet.
Filming has been underway on The Suicide Squad for nearly two months now, and it will hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
