One of the biggest questions for DC fans going into Birds of Prey is if it’s a sequel to Suicide Squad. One would assume with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn it would be a foregone conclusion that it is.
Well, not quite.
Speaking with Total Film, director Cathy Yan has cleared things up to a degree. “It’s a really big sandbox to play in,” she said speaking of the DC Universe. “I was given an opportunity to do something that was quite different, and wasn’t a sequel in any way.”

No, it isn’t the clearest answer one could hope for, but it is at least some form of an answer.
For as long as Birds of Prey has been a project, it has been labeled as not being a sequel. The same goes for James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad. Perhaps we’re just sharing characters and actors between various projects now. If you want it to be a sequel, apparently we’ll just be able to think of it that way.

Harley – Hero or Antihero?
The other burning question is if Harley has gone over to the good guys side this time around. We see her working with the other women, including a cop, so could we potentially label Ms. Quinn as a hero?
“I think Harley borders on a villain and an antihero,” Margot Robbie told Total Film. “In darker depictions, she could be playing for the darker side and be a more straight-up villain. In this film, she’s kind of doing the right thing, ultimately. But she’s not a moral person. So I consider her more antihero.”

It’s sounding more and more as if Birds of Prey will be whatever you want it to be.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be the first appearance of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn since Suicide Squad. She will be joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress, while Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be playing Black Canary. Rosie Perez will be playing Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain as well. And Ewan McGregor joined the cast as Gotham City villain Black Mask.
The new issue of Total Film will hit newsstands on Dec. 20, and Birds of Prey movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.
