The SAG awards were held on Sunday night, and it proved to be a banner night for Joaquin Phoenix. The actor will need to clear some more space in his home for yet another award earned for his role as Arthur Fleck in Joker.
Phoenix took home his first SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, marking his first win out of five nominations. During his acceptance speech, he acknowledged the other four actors in the category as well as stating that he was standing there on the shoulders of his “favorite actor, Heath Ledger.”
Phoenix also took home a win at the Golden Globes for this role. Next up will be the Bafta awards on Feb. 2 where Joker is nominated in 11 categories including Leading Actor. The following week on Feb. 9, the Oscars will be held where the film is up for 11 nominations where Phoenix will again be up for an award.
It certainly is looking as though this will be Phoenix’s year, and a chance for comic book films to finally be considered serious contenders in the awards race.
