Joker may not have won all the awards it is was up for at the 2020 Academy Awards, but it still ended up going home with a few trophies.
Going into the night with 11 nominations, it was all but certain that the film would be going home with some form of awards to its name.
Starting off with a dry spell, Hildur Guðnadóttir won another award for her work on Joker on Sunday night. The composer took home the award for Best Original Score adding to her immense new collection of hardware. Guðnadóttir also won for her work on Joker at the Golden Globes and BAFTA Awards. Is it any wonder that a Joker concert tour is being launched?
Then, the awards that the film was all but certain to win, Joaquin Phoenix took home the award for Best Actor. Considering he has been gobbling up awards for this role for months now, there wasn’t a lot of guessing to be done that he would pull it off again.
This, of course, marks the second time an actor has won an Academy Award for portraying the Joker. The previous winner was Heath Ledger for his turn as the Clown Prince of Crime in The Dark Knight. Is Batman’s arch-enemy becoming a route to Oscar glory? It’s definitely something left to ponder.
With the last of the Oscars given out for this year, awards season unofficially draws to a close. It has been a heck of a run for Joker, and one we hope to see copied in the future. Stuart Wilson won for Sound Mixing for 1917 and his next project is The Batman. Jacqueline Durran won for Best Costume Design for Little Women, and her next project is, you guessed it, The Batman. Perhaps in February 2022 we can gather for a few more statues.
