James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad wrapped filming on Friday, announced director James Gunn. Principal shooting for the film is over and done with. Now it’s off to the editing room, and there’s always the potential for reshoots.

Gunn took to his Instagram to make the announcement and reflect on filming.

“It was a hard, hard time in my life and yet the most fulfilling time I’ve ever had making a movie,” Gunn wrote. “The professionalism, talent, compassion and kindness of the cast and crew inspired me every day.”

Gunn offered his thanks to everyone at every stage of the film.

“I am grateful from the bottom of my heart for you all. You are why I make movies,” he wrote.

Talking to Deadline last May, Gunn said that Warner Bros. called him about Suicide Squad within the first two days following his initial firing from shooting on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn described his experience writing The Suicide Squad with as much positivity then as he does the shooting this week.

The Suicide Squad, it instantly started flowing. I don’t think I’ve had as much fun writing a script since maybe Dawn of the Dead. That’s what this whole movie has been like,” he said.

The Suicide Squad hits in 2021

The Suicide Squad cast features Margot Robbie, who is in theaters as Harley Quinn right now in Birds of Prey, as well as Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney, who are each reprising their roles from the first Suicide Squad movie. Joining them are Idris Elba, Taika Waititi, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian (as the Polka Dot Man), Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker (a Gunn stalwart), and Pete Davidson.

The Suicide Squad is currently set to hit theaters not this summer, but next, with a release date of August 6, 2021.
