Cathy Yan has plans in case a Birds of Prey sequel happens

As Birds of Prey has already flown into homes via a digital release, director Cathy Yan has shared some thoughts on what she would like to see happen in a sequel.

As the coronavirus pandemic spread across the planet, the Birds of Prey theatrical run was cut a bit short thanks to theater closures. The film ended its abbreviated global theatrical run with $198.17 million off of an estimated $82 million dollar budget. By traditional math, it turned a profit, albeit a small one.

Just in case it does receive a sequel, however, director Cathy Yan has already had some thoughts on what the film may cover.

Speaking with The Wrap, Yan said that one thing she would love to see is the addition of another DC villain. “I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy,” said Yan. That seems like a natural extension of Harley’s story at this point, and one fans would welcome to be sure.

But can a sequel happen that focuses on Harley? “I don’t know — I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either, so… hopefully.”

As it stands right now, no announcements have been made about a sequel, but we do know that we’ll see Robbie in the Harley role at least one more time in The Suicide Squad. Filming on that film was completed prior to the coronavirus shutdowns of multiple films.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
