DC has finally announced their plans to begin shipping new comics again! This news comes around four weeks after the news that Diamond Comic Distributors was to cease all incoming shipments of products in an attempt to help stem the spread of COVID-19 (you can check out our coverage of that here). Because of this shut down, DC comics halted most of their new comic releases, both physically and digitally. Since then, I know that I, and many others, have been anxiously wondering what might happen next for the comics publisher.
Well, the wait is finally over. DC has announced that they will resume shipping new comics at the end of April starting on the 28th. As part of their announcement they listed the following as a reason for this decision: “After surveying more than 2,000 stores across the U.S. and Canada, it became clear that many comic book store owners are finding new and creative ways to get books to the fans who want them.”
This news comes tied with the fact that they are going to be using two new distributors: Lunar Distribution and UCS Comic Distributors. These are both new companies connected to Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS) and Midtown Comics. This is a major change, since previously Diamond was the only physical distributor of comics prior to this, and essentially had a monopoly on the industry. It will be interesting to see what this decision might change down the line for comics in general.
While it’s exciting to know that there is a plan, and that DC will be releasing new comics soon, there are some changes to be noted about this new publishing schedule. Firstly, they will be publishing a limited number of titles for now. The first week of new titles includes a few reprints along with new titles, and later weeks have a shorter roster than we’d expect on a normal week. They stated on twitter that more comics will be added as more retailers open back up. Second, instead of Wednesdays new comics will now be released on Tuesdays to provide comic book stores more time to get their products out to people. As usual, digital copies of the comics will also be available for purchase simultaneously with their print counterparts.
The list of new titles through May 12th is:
Tuesday, April 28:
- Batman #89 (3rd Printing)
- Featuring the first appearance of Punchline!

DC has also provided a map of currently open comic book shops on their site where you can check to see which shops are open in your area that they plan to update regularly as they get news of more openings: www.dccomics.com/comicshoptracker.
I checked the map to see if my local shop was on there, and it’s not currently listed even though they are open. So, my suggestion is just to check with your LCS to see if they’re open and what their current shipping/delivery options are.
I know I’m excited by the prospect of some new comics coming out soon, but what do you all think? How do you feel about this latest announcement by DC? Any titles you’re excited for? Thoughts or concerns? Drop in a comment and let us know.
