Have you ever gone to a job interview and found out it wasn’t for the job you thought? Imagine you’re Anne Hathaway and you spend an hour auditioning for the wrong part.
Anne Hathaway appeared on the BBC Radio 1 segment “Movies That Made Me” discussing her career. As with any retrospective on her career, her turn as Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises comes up. She talked briefly about the backflip out the window of Wayne Manor she did, and how much fun that was to practice, but the talk then turned to her famous audition.
It has come up before that she went into her meeting with Christopher Nolan thinking she was auditioning to play Harley Quinn, but now she expands on it. “I came in and I had this lovely Vivian Westwood kind of beautiful-but-mad tailoring top with stripes going everywhere.” said Hathaway. “And I wore these flat Joker-ey looking shoes. And I was trying to give Chris these crazy little smiles.”
“About an hour into the meeting he said ‘Well, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but it’s Catwoman,'” Hathaway added. “And I was shifting into a different gear. ‘Now ok, we’re slinky. We’re slinky. And I hate my shirt. I love my shirt, but I hate it right now. We’re slinky.'”
You have to hand it to any actor who can shift gears like that and ends up with the part.
The entire interview is worth a watch as she discusses more details of her turn as Catwoman.
