The behind-the-scenes drama of Batwoman continues as the series deals with the departure of its lead actor, Ruby Rose.
Following the news that Ruby Rose had departed Batwoman, the powers that be at the series have been scrambling to come up with solutions. Originally the plan called for the role to be recast, but then came the news that a new character will be donning the cowl. While some fans have an issue with this strategy, it’s happening nonetheless.
Taking to her Twitter account, showrunner Caroline Dries have finally issued a statement about her view of the situation. “As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I’m well aware of the “Bury Your Gays” trope and I have no interest in participating in it,.” She went on to add, “That’s why it’s important to me as the showrunner to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and recasting Batwoman. Like you, I love Kate Kane – she’s the reason I wanted to do the show. We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.”
Dries has previously stated that Greg Berlanti – the producer behind all of the Arrowverse series – was the one to suggest the change of characters. If it was the correct suggestion remains to be seen.
Batwoman season 2 will debut in Jan. 2021.
