Barely a month after its launch, HBO Max is already set to lose a large portion of its DC films.
Subscribers to HBO Max found this week that multiple DC films have been moved to the “Last Chance” section of the service. The following films are marked as leaving the service on July 1.
- Batman
- Batman & Robin
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
- Batman Forever
- Batman Returns
- Catwoman
- Jonah Hex
- Justice League
- LEGO Batman Movie
- The Losers
- Suicide Squad
- Wonder Woman
The reason for the films being removed is due to pre-existing licensing deals. Speaking with the Observer, an HBO spokesperson said, “We have a collection of DC films that will rotate on the platform. We have a new batch coming in July and then another batch coming in August. And I have just confirmed that the batch that is on right now will be returning.”
There was no indication when these films will return, but it sounds as though you shouldn’t expect any DC films to stay on HBO Max on a permanent basis. Disney Plus launched with an incomplete collection of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but it has filled in the gaps as deals expired. Thus far, however, it doesn’t look as though any of those films will be rotating out.
While that had been the dream with HBO Max, it doesn’t appear it will be the reality, at least for now.
