Watchmen takes home 11 Emmy awards

HBO had a big night overall at the Emmys, and the lion’s share of that goes to Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen limited series.

Watchmen went into the Emmy race with 26 nominations, and it took home 11 of those potential awards. Four of the wins came on the main night of the awards and included:

  • Limited Series
  • Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II)
  • Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special (Stephen Williams for “This Extraordinary Being”)
  • Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Regina King)

The other seven awards were from the Creative Arts division and included:

  • Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie or Special (Victoria Thomas and Meagan Lewis)
  • Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited Series or Movie (Gregory Middleton for “This Extraordinary Being”)
  • Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes (Sharen Davis and Valerie Zielonka for “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice”)
  • Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice”)
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited Series or Movie (Henk Van Eeghen for “A God Walks Into Abar”)
  • Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special (Brad North, Harry Cohen, Jordan Wilby, Tiffany S. Griffith, Antony Zeller, A.J. Shapiro, Sally Boldt, Zane Bruce and Lindsay Pepper for “This Extraordinary Being”)
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited Series or Movie (Douglas Axtell, Joe DeAngelis and Chris Carpenter for “This Extraordinary Being”)

For reference, “This Extraordinary Being” was the sixth episode and was the episode that was primarily shot in black and white. “It’s Summer and We’Re Running Out of Ice” was the first episode, and “A God Walks into Abar” was the eighth episode and dealt with Doctor Manhattan introducing himself to Angela in the bar in Saigon.

It was a good awards season for Watchmen, and one we’re sure will extend HBO’s relationship with Lindelof for whatever story he looks to tell next.
