James Gunn adds details about the Peacemaker series

Following the surprise announcement of a Peacemaker series, James Gunn took some time to answer fan questions on social media.

Gunn announced on Wednesday that he would be teaming up with John Cena for a Peacemaker series on HBO Max. Following the announcement the director spent some time answering questions from fans as to what we can expect from the series.

First and foremost, despite some reports saying it was a prequel, Gunn confirmed that “we’re holding off announcing the timeline of the Peacemaker TV show until after The Suicide Squad movie.” Clearly this is to keep fans from guessing if this means he survives the film or not.

As to why a Peacemaker series when the public hasn’t even seen the character yet, Gunn replied, “It’s also DC coming to me & saying, “If you could do a TV show about any character from The Suicide Squad, which one would you do 1st?” And I was like, “I’ve been having this idea about Peacemaker…” I’m always driven by what excites me most creatively in the moment.

As to what this means for the status of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it seems that we have the coronavirus to thank for this series as it gave him the time to fit in an extra project. “I’m doing Peacemaker in the time always allotted between The Suicide Squad & GotGVol3. Normally I would have been taking more of a break in this space but it’s Covid, I’m stuck at home, so I wrote a TV series.”

Gunn was asked if he had any thoughts on using other characters from The Suicide Squad to which he simply replied, “It will be done.”

It sounds as though Gunn has a lot planned for this eight-part season and we can’t wait to see it. Filming is expected to take place in early 2021.

The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
