Warner Bros still on the fence about Wonder Woman 1984 release

Despite its most recent release date change, it seems that Wonder Woman 1984 is not set in stone to be released in 2020.

As New York state is reopening a limited number of theaters, movie studios are studying what to do with all of the films left on the schedule. The highest-profile film still dated for 2020 is Wonder Woman 1984, and it is currently scheduled for Dec. 25. However, it seems that the date may still be in play.

According to a report from Variety, Warner Bros. is currently studying the potential return on Wonder Woman 1984, and won’t make a final decision for some weeks yet. While there is little doubt it would have been a blockbuster pre-pandemic, it is far less certain in 2020. Should the film bring in even just 50% of what the first film did – over $800 million globally – it would be difficult for the film to be profitable.

Warner Bros. reportedly still would like to release the film in 2020, but with the volatile market is said to still be considering moving it to 2021. Director Patty Jenkins even recently commented in an interview that she was still unsure of the release date as well.

Even prior to the pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 has gone through some changes. The film was originally scheduled to release on Nov. 1, 2019. It was announced in Oct. 2018, however, that the film would push back seven months to the June 5, 2020 release date. It was further delayed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. At that time the date moved to Aug. 14, and then on June 12 it moved to the Oct. 2 date. And then it moved to Dec. 25 on Sept. 11 of this year.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 25.
