It might be easy to have hurt feelings after you finish five seasons of a TV series based on the Gotham City police and another one gets announced. But the creators of Gotham seem to be fine with a new one being on the way.
Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller were responsible for Gotham on Fox. The partners have now moved on to Pennyworth, but Warner Bros. is heading back to the Gotham Police Department for a new series set in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie.
Speaking with ComicBook.com in support of the new season of Pennyworth, Cannon and Heller were asked about their feelings on the upcoming Gotham PD spinoff from The Batman, and they think it’s going to be a bit easier this time.
“We were the last big network battle cruiser to leave the harbor, but we were very much a network show,” said Heller. “I think now that we’ve realized that streaming is the new god, I think Matt’s going to have a much easier time selling the kind of show that we wanted to do, because he’s got a movie with movie stars to back it up.”
Cannon thinks being on HBO Max will help the series, saying, “It’s going to be truer to the nastiness of what Gotham should really be, I guess.”
Could we finally see a truly gritty Gotham? It looks like this may be the best shot yet.
The new series, which was given a straight-to-series order, hit a speedbump in Nov. when Terrance Winter (Boardwalk Empire) stepped away as showrunner. A replacement has not been named as of yet.
The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
