Consumers in the United Kingdom appear to have really wanted to watch Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker at home.
According to a year-end report from the British Association for Screen Entertainment, Joker topped the home sales chart in the U.K. with 1.4 million copies sold across physical and digital media. Films that followed it on the list include Frozen 2, Jumanji: The Next Level, and 1917.
The overall home video market grew by 26% in 2020 to a total of £3.3 billion (approx. $4.48 billion) with £194 million ($263 million) going to digital downloads, and £21 million ($28.55 million) to 4K UHD discs.
WIth the multiple lockdowns due to the coronavirus throughout the U.K. during 2020 into 2021, an increase in sales of home media doesn’t come as the largest surprise. While streaming is a nice luxury, there’s still something to be said for watching a film when and how you want.
