Black Mask to menace Gotham in Batwoman season 2

It appears that Gotham City is in for some trouble in Batwoman season 2 as Black Mask is on his way to terrorize the city.

According to a new report from Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) is going to have her hands full protecting Gotham City in season 2 of the Batwoman series. We already knew that Safiyah (Shivaani Ghai) will be appearing, and that Victor Zsasz (Alex Morf) will make his presence known. We suspected there might be another big bad on the way when it was revealed that Wilder will fight the False Face Society in the season premiere, and as that is Black Mask’s gang it would make sense he would show up at some point. (And lets not forget that Hush is also running around with Bruce Wayne’s face.)

“We have a couple big bads this season,” Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries said. “One, [who] we teed up midway through last season, is this woman Safiyah, and she’s sort of Alice’s Achilles’ Heel. And ultimately yes with the False Face Society, we will see the leader of this gang as Black Mask later on in the season.”

It seems that Wilder has a personal issue with Black Mask and his gang. “While Ryan never used drugs, she was in a relationship where somebody was using drugs and it’s ultimately what got Ryan put away in jail. So, it’s this idea that Ryan is this innocent woman and if she were white, per se, she might not have had the same punishment [that] she, as an innocent Black woman, had to go through. That’s a huge piece of her backstory, so that’s something we’re exploring this year,” says Dries. “Batwoman has this particular vendetta against the False Face Society because the idea of drugs permeating the city and nobody taking any responsibility for it strikes at her core.”

No word yet on who will play Black Mask. The character was last seen in live-action in 2020’s Birds of Prey being played by Ewan McGregor.
