Ava DuVernay’s Naomi series has found its lead actress as well as three of its series regulars.
The CW has announced that Kaci Walfall (Army Wives, Power, The Lion King on Broadway) will be taking on the role of Naomi. She will be joined by Alexander Wraith (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Cranston Johnson (Filthy Rich, P-Valley), and Camila Moreno.
Wraith will be playing the tattoo parlor owner, Dee. It seems he may know about what is happening in the town than he is letting on.
Zumbado, the mysterious owner of a used car lot, will be portrayed by Johnson. Naomi actively avoids him due to rumors about his past, but a chance encounter will impact both of them.
Moreno rounds out the three regulars and will be playing Lourdes. She’s a young woman with a sarcastic attitude who works in a vintage collectibles shop. She shares an obsession with comic books with Naomi, as well as an unrequited crush.
This marks the second DC-related television project for DuVernay, as she already has DMZ moving forward at HBO Max as a limited series. She is also working on a film adaptation of New Gods for Warner Bros.
Naomi marks the first DC-related project for The CW not being produced by Berlanti Productions. Instead, Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes from Array will serve as producers.
As with all pilots, this means that one episode will be filmed and then sent to the network for a final decision. Should it meet with their approval, it will then move on to a formal order for additional episodes and be placed on the schedule. If the pilot does not meet with approval, then it can either be sent back to be reworked, or the project will be terminated.
With DuVernay’s growing relationship with the various divisions of Warner Bros., it feels as though this series has a good shot at being picked up. We’ll have to wait for the official order.
