DC Films has found its writer for the Zatanna film, with Oscar-nominated Emerald Fennell taking on the project.

Fresh from her 2021 Oscar nominations for directing and writing Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell will work J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions on a big-screen adaptation of Zatanna.

As it currently stands, no potential release date has been announced for the Zatanna film, and no casting has taken place as of yet.

Beyond her work on Promising Young Woman, Fennell also served as the showrunner on season two of Killing Eve. She also has spent part of her career as an actor appearing in The Crown as Camilla Parker Bowles and films such as Anna Karenina and The Danish Girl.

Zatanna has previously appeared in live-action in Smallville, and has appeared in numerous animated projects. She is commonly associated with Justice League Dark and was slated to appear in the abandoned film written by Guillermo Del Toro.

In the comics, Zatanna is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the DC Universe. Her father is Zatara who, while powerful, isn’t considered as powerful as his daughter.

DC Films has been on a roll with female characters as of late, and it doesn’t appear they will be slowing down any time soon.
