Emerald Fennell has a big task ahead of her writing the script for the Zatanna movie, but it sounds as though she’s more than ready for it.
Fennell received multiple 2021 Oscar nominations for directing and writing Promising Young Woman. Now, out in support of her Oscar campaign, the mutli-hyphenate talent is naturally going to speak at times about her latest project. Announced in March, Fennell will work J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions on a big-screen adaptation of Zatanna.
Speaking with Variety, Gennel shared that she sees this as “a new different challenge.”
Variety also spoke with her about whether or not she may end up directing the film. “It’s so exciting. That’s not a conversation that’s happened at all, so I have no insight, and also, we’re still in the early days,” shared Fennell. “It’s something that we’ve been working on for a while. I’ve been speaking to Bad Robot [Productions], who are amazing. You want to get the first bit right, which is the script, before you think of anything else. It’s a very specific thing – the world of superhero movies is incredibly exciting, but it’s also a new different challenge. The main thing for me is making sure that it’s really, really good. I’m such a genre fan. I’m a fan of witchcraft, magic, and comic books, and this is scary and intense.”
Whether or not she wins an Oscar may have some direct impact if she will also direct the film. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Zatanna currently does not have a release date scheduled.
