Will the HBO Max Gotham Police TV series finally be the live-action adaptation of Gotham Central that some of us have speculated it is? It looks like that won’t be the case after all.
Details have been sparse in regards to the upcoming The Batman spinoff for HBO Max. What little information is out there has said that it will focus on the Gotham City police around a year before the events of the movie. Now, comic writer Ed Brubaker may have shared an important piece of the puzzle.
Many fans have speculated that the upcoming series would in the same vein as the Gotham Central comic series. Those speculating this was the premise included the series’ co-creator, Brubaker. While appearing on a recent episode of Fatman Beyond, Brubaker shared, “I was like ‘maybe they’re really going to make Gotham Central this time,’ and so I reached out to a producer who works for Matt Reeves and he says, ‘no, that’s not really Gotham Central.” Brubaker went on to add, “They’re making sure that they don’t call it Gotham Central and it’s more of a spinoff from the movie. It’s like the James Gordon show.”
This would imply that Jeffrey Wright will be starring in the series, but no formal announcements have been made yet regarding any cast members. The only firm piece of information recently was that Terrence Winter departed the project last Nov. over “creative differences.” He was then replaced by Joe Barton is the showrunner on the project.
Hopefully, we’ll learn more about this spinoff series in the coming months with The Batman having finally finished production.
The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
