The CW orders Naomi to series, Painkiller given a pass

The CW is making its Fall 2021 announcements, and one DC series is moving forward while another is going to be passed on.

Ava DuVernay’s Naomi is moving to series at The CW. Based on the DC series of the same name, the project just went through the pilot phase and has now been given a series order. No word as of yet if it’s a full or half-season order.

There was some bad news as well as Painkiller, the proposed spinoff to Black Lightning was passed on by the network. Warner Bros. TV Group President Channing Dungey told Deadline that the series “came in really solidly.” There’s no word if The CW passing means it’s completely dead or if it may be shopped around.

Another series that may be of interest is Powerpuff, a proposed live-action take on Powerpuff Girls that would show the trie of heroes as adults. The proposed series is being sent back for a second pilot later this year, but with the cast – Chloe Bennet (Blossom), Dove Cameron (Bubbles) and Yana Perrault (Buttercup) – remaining in place. “We’ve got a trio of terrific actresses at the center of that,” said Dungey. “I’m not going to say that it hasn’t been a challenge. Bringing a children’s cartoon into live-action adulthood has been a really fine like to walk but I think we’ve done a pretty great job walking it.”

No word as of yet as to when Naomi will debut.
