It seems that James Gunn is planning on keeping his feet in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe for some time to come.

Having just completed The Suicide Squad, and is wrapping up work on his Peacemaker series, it seems Gunn is already developing another DC project.

Gunn was asked on an Instagram post if he was developing any new DCEU projects. The director simply replied, “Yes.” This led to debates on social media if he was simply meaning the upcoming Peacemaker series, but he has confirmed it’s something else.

“Yes, I’m developing another DC project besides Peacemaker,” Gunn confirmed.

Gunn is in post-production on Peacemaker while also in pre-production on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With his schedule built up as it is at the moment, it would be somewhere around 18 to 24 months before he could work on another DC project.

As to what the project could be is anyone’s guess. We don’t know if it’s a movie or TV project, and we don’t know what characters he could potentially be looking at. Both Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) we’re breakout characters from The Suicide Squad. A TV project based on either of those characters would certainly not go amiss with a large number of fans. For now, however, we will be left to speculate.

Gunn will be taking part in DC FanDome on Oct. 16 in support of Peacemaker. He confirmed in further social media posts that his new project will not be revealed at the virtual event as it isn’t ready yet.

Peacemaker is set to debut on HBO Max in Jan. 2022.
