Batgirl has found its villain as Brendan Fraser has joined the cast of the HBO Max original.
Deadline was first to report the news that Fraser was joining the film, but no one seems certain on who he is playing as of yet. While many rumors have pointed to Firefly being the villain of the film, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter reported that he was hearing that he will be playing Carmine Falcone. Adding fuel to the Falcone rumor, Kit also reported that Sylvester Stallone was first offered the role, but negotiations didn’t work out.
Kit later said that insiders were telling him that it is indeed Firefly, but we’ll just have to wait for an official announcement.
Fraser has been having a bit of a career resurgence over the past few years. He currently plays Cliff in Doom Patrol on HBO Max, and just wrapped on Darren Aronofsky’s next film The Whale. He is next slated to appear in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, starting Leonardo DiCapprio and Robert De Niro.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct the film and are currently in Scotland preparing for the production. Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Birds of Prey) wrote the film’s script.
No release date has been announced for Batgirl as of yet.
