HBO Max and HBO ended 2021 on a high note as the services made their way to 73.8 million global subscribers.

In July 2021 AT&T had raised its target for the end of the year from a range of 67 to 70 million, up to 70 to 73 million. Thanks to what the company called a “strong” fourth quarter, it actually managed to make it to 73.8 million.

By comparison, the company added 1.9 million subscribers in the third quarter to end with 69.4 million global subscribers. The 4.4 million additional subscribers this last quarter are attributed to “strong international and ad-supported subscriber growth.”

AT&T had originally targeted 75 to 90 million subscribers by the end of 2025, but upped that to 120 to 150 million back in March.

Some of this growth can, of course, be attributed to the Warner Bros. 2021 policy of day-and-date film releases. That policy came to an end in 2022, but HBO Max still has a lot of plans for expansion in 2022. Beyond opening in additional regions, it will also launch 12 exclusive films including Batgirl. It will also be focusing on big-budget series projects such as Peacemaker and the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.

As the new home for everything related to DC, it looks as though growth is definitely going well for HBO Max and HBO.
