Another character is taking the leap from the printed page to live-action as filming on Batgirl continues.
According to a report from Deadline, Ivory Aquino (When They See Us, Tales of the City) has joined the cast of HBO Max’s upcoming Batgirl film. She will be playing Barbara Gordon’s roommate, Alysia Yeoh. In the comics, Alysia was a transgender Filipino woman, as is Aquino.
Alysia made her comics debut in Batgirl Vol. 4, #1 in 2011 and was created by Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf.
Batgirl is currently filming on location in Glasgow, Scotland with Leslie Grace starring in the lead role. She will be joined by J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Batman. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Birds of Prey).
No word as of yet as to the Batgirl release date, but it will premiere on HBO Max some time in 2022.
