Upcoming Comics: April 19, 2022

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics!

I’ve spent, like, a solid day trying to think of a decent intro, and I got nothing. I love comics! You guys love comics?

Oh, one thing I should do is give you guys a movie recommendation. Everything Everywhere All At Once is a phenomenal movie that does everything a multiverse movie should do – it’s the kind of movie that makes other films wonder what they’re even doing by comparison, and any fan of comic book and sci fi stories should give it a shot. If you’ve seen it, let me know what you think!

Now, here’s what we’ve got for this week:

Upcoming Comics

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #2

The Man of Steel and the Dark Knight have arrived at the compound of Niles Caulder-the Chief in charge of that strange band of misfits known as the Doom Patrol-but all is not as it seems. While Batman works with Niles to cure Superman of his freakish transformations, a side mission to track a mysterious figure known as “the Demon” attracts the Dark Knight’s attention…and moreover, it could have some connection to Superman’s poisoning at the hands of Metallo! It’s danger, intrigue, and the surprise appearance of Deadman in chapter two of World’s Finest!

Art by Dan Mora
Colours by Tamra Bonvillain

Thoughts: I have barely read Doom Patrol. It should not get me so excited to see them in a Batman/Superman comic. But it does.

Batman: The Knight #4

Bruce Wayne’s journey to become Batman continues in the cold mountains of North Korea, where he seeks to learn the legendary fighting style of Master Kirigi! This will be his most difficult challenge yet, and he might not survive without the help of a mysterious new “friend.”

Written by Chip Zdarsky
Art by Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colours by Ivan Plascencia

Thoughts: Any theories or predictions on how much this story will factor into Zdarsky’s larger Batman tale?

Nightwing #91

Trying to save a city that’s even more beyond saving than Gotham is no small task, and even someone like Nightwing needs a day off to relax with his best friend and to recharge-but when your best friend is Wally West, a.k.a. the Flash, a “recharge” might not end up being so relaxing!

Written by Tom Taylor
Pencils and Inks by Geraldo Borges
Colours by Adriano Lucas
Cover Art by Bruno Redondo

Thoughts: What I like about Taylor’s Nightwing, more than anything else, is it does a good job of establishing Dick as a hero of equal standing in the superhero world with Bruce. This is especially good when you consider that Dark Crisis seems to be dealing with what happens when Legacy characters take centre stage.

Robins #6

The games are over and Jenny Wren’s traps have finally sprung around the Robins! Can the teen wonders unravel the truth behind Jenny’s connections to Batman- or will the true first Robin finally rip apart the Bat-Family once and for all?

Written by Tim Seeley
Art by Baldemar Rivas
Colours by Romulo Fajardo

Thoughts: As far as I can tell, the general consensus to this book ending is “thank god.”

Batman News Critic: Matina

Catwoman #42

You know what they say-some of them are gonna love you, and some of them are gonna hate you-but it doesn’t matter as long as they need you. Black Mask wants to be the dirty little secret of the Gotham underworld, but Catwoman’s even better at being a secret when she needs to be. Thankfully she’s not afraid to have a little help-from Valmont, Onyx, and the newly minted Tomcat…exactly the kind of guy to let her in the house.

Catwoman: Lonely City #3

Catwoman had assembled the crew of a lifetime for her heist of the Batcave, and everything was going to plan-until it wasn’t. When tragedy and disaster strike, she’s got to find a way to land on her feet…but as her need for answers grows stronger and more desperate, she might be prepared to make a deal with the Devil himself…

Written and Illustrated by Cliff Chiang

Thoughts: So far this book is painting a wonderful and layered view of older, more tired characters within Gotham City. It’s cool to see that DC continues to make books that think a little outside the box of traditional continuity!

Review will be covered in a trade release.

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat! Here you can see everything else that DC is releasing this week, beyond the scope of the books we cover on the website.

I absolutely love the fake reviews smattered all over the final issue of Blue and Gold.

Ratings

Most Excited: Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #2. Doom Patrol. God, I gotta finish Gerard Way’s run.

Least Excited: Catwoman #42. I feel a little bad saying it, but I really lost all interest in this comic after V left it. It’s probably not a fair assessment, though. The cover looks very nice!

Wild Card: Robins #6. I don’t think the ending will save this book, but it does have the potential to make the comic something surprising and memorable, if nothing else.

Best wishes, and see you in the reviews!
