The Shazam: Fury of the Gods release date has shifted slightly as marketing begins on Avatar: The Way of Water.

This past March, Warner Bros. shifted some of its upcoming DC film release dates. While Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom and The Flash both shifted backward, Shazam: Fury of the Gods actually moved up several months. The new release date was set for Dec. 16, 2022. While a holiday release seemed like a good spot, it also happened to be the same date as the sequel to the highest-grossing film in history. After years of waiting, James Cameron’s Avatar was finally getting a sequel.

If there is one thing you know about Cameron films, however, it’s that he quite often shifts his release dates. Warner Bros. was probably waiting to see what would happen, but Cameron seems locked on this date now. The director appeared at CinemaCon on Wednesday to debut the first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water. The trailer will now hit theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in May, so it looks as though everything is indeed set for the film to make it to theaters this time.

Not long after the debut of the trailer, Warner Bros. announced that the second Shazam film will be moving back to the following week on Dec. 21. It’s only a one weekend delay, but it seems like the sensible move to make to get away from what could be one of the biggest films of the year.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods will now hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2022.
