Upcoming Comics: May 10, 2022

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics!

We have had quite an influx of quality reviewers on the Batman News team as of late, so I’d like to take a minute to introduce all of them. Please give a warm welcome to Jackson, Theresa, William, Aaron and, of course, Jeremy! Jeremy’s been doing some work here for the last few months, but the others have started releasing their work at the end of April and the beginning of May. On their profiles you’ll find their current articles and a little intro about them – please be sure to say hi, both here and whenever you see them. They’re gonna do great!

Now, here’s what we’ve got for this week:

Upcoming Comics

The Jurassic League #1

You know the story: an infant escapes the destruction of its home planet and is deposited on Earth to be raised by human parents. A goddess from a lost city defends truth. A Tyrannosaurus rex dons the visage of a bat to strike fear into evildoers’ hearts. This heroic trinity, alongside a league of other super-powered dinosaurs, join forces to save a prehistoric Earth from the sinister machinations of Darkseid. Wait…what? Okay, maybe you don’t know the story. So join us and bear witness to a brand-new-yet older than time-adventure and experience the Justice League as you have never seen them before!

Thoughts: This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Hell yes.

Batman: Urban Legends #15

Zatanna has to save Batman’s soul! Ace the Bat-Hound must confront the source of his trauma…The Joker! Meanwhile, the night of Batman’s auction is finally here! Katana doesn’t buy what Lady Shiva is selling for a second about the new Birds of Prey, and she’s going to let her know personally. Batman has to team up with Plastic Man to save a criminal from having his life taken by the Penguin and KGBeast!

Written by Mark Russell, Vita Ayala, Joey Esposito and Che Grayson
Pencils and Inks by Nikola Cizmesija, Karl Mostert, Jason Howard and Serg Acuña
Colours by Jason Howard, Nick Filardi, Trish Mulvihill and Ivan Plascencia
Cover Art by Nikola Cizmesija

Thoughts: I’m always down for more Plastic Man stories! This price tag can still go to hell.

Future State: Gotham #13

“Batmen at War” part one! The rumors regarding Bruce’s death have been greatly exaggerated! Now, despite the best efforts of the impostor, Hush, the real deal has returned with the help of Talia al Ghul. Together they must travel the world to find their son, Damian Wayne, before it’s too late! The return of Batman and Robin to Future State Gotham can’t be far behind, unless…something terrible happens first!

Thoughts: While I still like this concept, I think people are starting to get more confused than anything else as to why it’s still going, with Batman Beyond at the same time no less.

Justice League vs The Legion of Super-Heroes #3

The Justice League is trapped in the 31st century with the Legion of Super-Heroes, while the looming terror of the Great Darkness hovers over both time period simultaneously. Even as the great heroes of the 21st century get to experience the fantastic far-flung future, the mysteries behind the Gold Lantern and the Great Darkness threaten all of existence. What is the secret behind the Great Darkness? And will the greatest heroes of two ages be able to stop it before it’s too late?

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils and Inks by Scott Godlewski
Cover Art by Ryan Cody

Thoughts: Interesting to see Bendis is getting on the Great Darkness train too.

Suicide Squad: Get Joker #3

The startling conclusion of this Black Label epic rockets to its surprising, yet inevitable, confrontation between The Joker and the Suicide Squad. With Red Hood wondering who he can trust as he’s forced to team up with Harley Quinn and other rogues against the Clown Prince of Crime, one last betrayal changes everything before the final page.

Thoughts: Jesus, this comic’s still going? It’s been seven months since the last issue!

Batman: The Knight – Compendium Edition #1

Chip Zdarsky and Carmine Di Giandomenico’s unique take on an orphaned Bruce Wayne’s path to becoming Gotham City’s guardian, has released to incredible critical and sales acclaim. Batman: The Knight – Compendium Edition combines issues #1 – #3 of the series, but also includes a special bonus: a preview of part one of “Failsafe,” Zdarsky’s debut story arc in Batman #125 (on sale July 7).

Pencils and Inks by Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colours by Ivan Plascencia

Thoughts: I quite like the idea of having compendiums in comic form like this, but I’d rather it be more then three issues. SHIELD did it just fine with, like, five.

Issues have already been reviewed.

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat! Here you can see everything else that DC is releasing this week, beyond the scope of the books we cover on the website.

Ratings

Most Excited: Jurassic League #1. Come on. I mean, dinosaurs. Come on. You get it.

Least Excited: Justice League vs the Legion of Super-Heroes #3. It gives me psychic damage to know Bendis is still working on a League book.

Wild Card: Suicide Squad: Get Joker #3. When your final issue of a three-part comic comes seven months after part 2, who knoes how it’s gonna go!

Best wishes, and see you in the reviews!
