Dwayne Johnson is already on the promotional tour for the Black Adam movie, but he is also looking towards the future with hopes for a movie that’s hard to conceive of ever actually happening.
Speaking with Total Film for its cover story on Black Adam this month, Johsnon said he is hoping for multiple spinoffs to come out of his film. It seems, however, there is an even bigger fish he would like to go after some day: A Marvel and DC crossover film.
“I am optimistic,” said Johnson. “Just my nature is optimistic. And especially when it comes to creative. Especially when it comes to movies. And especially when it comes to the pantheon of DC superheroes and supervillains. Across the street, we have the pantheon of superheroes and supervillains of Marvel. To me, they can not only exist, but they should, in my mind, cross paths one day.”
While such a thing has happened in the comic books over the years, getting films to crossover would be a pretty large undertaking. Cinematic crossovers such as Aliens vs Predator could happen because both properties were owned by the same studio. But, of course, the Freddy Krueger/Jason Vorhees crossover went through years of negotiations and development and did finally release to financial success.
While a Marvel and DC crossover isn’t impossible, the negotiations would be something unlike anyone has ever seen. And one can only imagine what the budget would be.
We can always hope this might come to be even as a one-off Elseworlds-style story, but we aren’t quite ready to hold our breath.
