Upcoming Comics: September 20, 2022

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics!

Pretty big week, but I don’t have a lot to say here. I’d like to remind everyone that me and some other members of the Batman News Team will be heading to New York Comic Con this year – we hope to get a lot of coverage, and we would love your input on what you’d like us to show you! Any panels you want thorough recaps of? Any people you want interviewed?

Now, here’s what we’ve got for this week:

Upcoming Comics

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #7

BRAND-NEW STORY ARC! The untold story of Superman’s short-lived sidekick is at last revealed, but what secret connection to one of DC’s most timeless tales does this story foreshadow? Only time will tell (that’s a clue, folks). The next epic arc in the World’s Finest saga begins here!

Written by Mark Waid
Pencils and Inks by Dan Mora
Colours by Tamra Bonvillain

Thoughts: You know, we’ve spent a lot of time covering Superman’s “sidekicks” as his family, but not a lot of time lately about them as his “proteges”. I think this is an interesting angle.

Batman: The Knight #9

Bruce Wayne has traveled the world learning from the best to be the best. Class time is now over, the final exam is here! Enter…the Demon’s Head!

Written by Chip Zdarsky
Pencils and Inks by Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colours by Ivan Plascencia

Thoughts: I recently rewatched Batman Begins, and that movie goes at a breakneck pace! Yet even so, the relationship between Bruce and Ra’s al Ghul shines through as one of the highlights of that movie. Theirs is a relationship that I find incredibly important to the Batman mythos.

Batman – One Bad Day: Two-Face

The duel of duality! Two-Face has always been viewed as Batman’s most tragic villain. If only Harvey Dent hadn’t been scarred by acid he could have continued his good work as D.A. in Gotham City and been Batman’s greatest ally and friend…right? Or has Batman extended Harvey Dent too much grace in his multiple attempts at reform? He’ll question himself as Harvey Dent is free once more, scarred but seemingly free of Two-Face’s influence. But…when it’s revealed Harvey Dent’s father has been threatened to be murdered on his 88th birthday, will Two-Face be able to resist joining the party? From the bestselling creative team of Mariko Tamaki (Detective Comics, Crush & Lobo) and Javier Fernandez (Nightwing, King Spawn)!

Written by Mariko Tamaki
Pencils and Inks by Javier Fernandez
Colours by Jordie Bellaire

Thoughts: Tamaki’s Tec run was mixed at Batman News, but I quite like her shorter-story content, like Dark Detective. We’ll see which side of the coin this lands on! You see, it’s funny, because it’s Two-Face related.

Nightwing #96

They say love is when two hearts find their happy place right next to each other, but to Heartless, that’s just the wall of jars of hearts he has in his back office. As Dick and Babs’s two hearts do find their happy place next to each other, one question they ask each other proves difficult to answer.

Thoughts: I adore Cassandra glaring from the corner of the cover like that. And rightly so, give her a space! And Duke, while you’re at it.

Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary Special #1

You are cordially invited to an oversize extravaganza celebrating the Clown Princess of Crime’s 30th birthday in this fantabulous special! That’s right-Harley Quinn turns 30 in absolute style and has invited a squad of her old creative pals to join her with a killer lineup of amazing stories! And the reviews are in-it’s guaranteed AWESOME:
“Last chance, Quinn. Don’t make me do this.” -Amanda Waller
“Wait…you’re not going back to…” -Red Tool
“Sigh.” -Poison Ivy

Written by Stephanie Phillips, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti and Paul Dini
Pencils by Riley Rossmo, Chad Hardin, Guillem March and Stjepan Sejic
Inks by Riley Rossmo, Chad Hardin, Guillem March, Stjepan Sejic, Rafael Albuquerque, John Timms, Mico Suayan, Jason Badower, Rachel Dodson, Erica Henderson and Dan Hipp
Colours by Alex Sinclair, Stjepan Sejic, John Timms, Erica Henderson, Dan Hipp, Annette Kwok, Marcelo Maiolo, Terry Dodson, Ivan Plascencia and Tomeu Morey
Cover Art by Amanda Conner, Alex Sinclair, Sabine Rich and Ivan Tao

Thoughts: It’s nice to see Paul Dini still regularly contributing to Harley Quinn! I hope that guy is bathing in residuals from DC, though I doubt any comic creator is all that rich.

Catwoman #47

Things start to heat up between Valmont and Catwoman when the handsome devil in white shows Catwoman a grand gesture that proves to her the lengths he will go to for her attention. A crow in white and a bat in black-if only there was a moral gray zone for this one cat.

Titans United: Bloodpact #1

The Titans are back, united against a common foe…aren’t they? All seems lost when Tim Drake wakes, out of uniform and seemingly out of time. Surely he was just fighting alongside Nightwing, Superboy, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Donna Troy? But where is Raven and what links her to the Fearsome Five? A blood sacrifice is coming that will change the world forever.

Written by Cavan Scott
Pencils and Inks by Lucas Meyer
Colours by Tony Avina
Cover Art by Eddy Barrows and Marcelo Maiolo

Thoughts: Cavan Scott is a good writer, and it seems the first book was well-liked enough to invite a sequel! Glad this one doesn’t have any other Titans books to compete with right now.

Dark Crisis: Young Justice #4

Young Justice against the world! The fake reality that Superboy, Impulse, and Robin are on has completely turned against them, sending the combined might of the JLA and the Titans they grew up with against them. It will take all of their combined might to fight through this onslaught and find out who is responsible for their imprisonment. Wonder Girl, Arrowette, and Red Tornado head to San Francisco’s Titan’s Island in search of assistance but all they find are bad memories.

DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #2

The undead Darkseid begins his assault on the galaxy…attacking Korugar first! Could the fate of the planet depend on the Yellow Lantern Corps teaming up with a Green Lantern? Also, what horrors do Big Barda and Mister Miracle find on New Genesis?!

Written by Tom Taylor
Pencils by Trevor Hairsine
Inks by Andy Lanning
Colours by Rain Beredo
Cover Art by Trevor Hairsine, Rain Beredo and Howard Porter

Thoughts: This is going to be quite the saga by the time it’s through. I completely expect DC animation to make several movies about it, for better or for worse (worse).

DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #3

The apocalyptic Suicide Squad team are planning for an all-out assault at the Blood Farm when one of Gotham’s daughters finds them first. Batwoman gives them the chance to risk it all to save one of their own…but will this new mission give them the power they need to take on the mysterious Lord Cinder and his lieutenants? Or are they playing right into his hands? In the backup, learn the tragic story of Nightwing’s betrayal and how he became a vampire!

Written by Matthew Rosenberg, Alex Paknadel and Emma Vieceli
Pencils and Inks by Pasquale Qualano and Haining
Colours by Nicola Righi
Cover Art by Alan Quah

Thoughts: Is having two apocalyptic AU comics running at the same time a good idea?

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat! Here you can see everything else that DC is releasing this week, beyond the scope of the books we cover on the website.

Ratings

Most Excited: Batman – One Bad Day: Two Face. I feel like I haven’t read a great Two-Face story since All-Star Batman, though I could be wrong!

Least Excited: Catwoman #47. The story’s lost momentum for me, especially with Catwoman having another story in Batman that I actually am following (even if that isn’t perfect either).

Wild Card:  Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary Special. I love a lot of the creators here, but I resent the price and the amount of time it took for me to write it into this article, thanks to Amazon’s horrible page layout.

Best wishes, and see you in the reviews!
