Is the world ready for multiple versions of Harley Quinn? It seems that Margot Robbie is.
Over the course of three movies, Margot Robbie has really put a lot of effort into bringing Harley Quinn to life. With the news that Lady Gaga has joined the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux, and potentially as Harley, it’s natural that people will want to know how Robbie feels about it.
Pretty good it would seme.
Speaking with MTV in support of David O. Russell’s new film, Amsterdam, Robbie said, “It makes me so happy, because I said from the beginning all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters that… the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor, and it’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman or someone gets to do their Macbeth, you know?”
Robbie went on to add, “It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing, and I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
The first Joker film went on to be the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever with $1.07 billion globally. It also was nominated for 11 Oscars with Hildur Guðnadóttir winning for Original Music Score and Joaquin Phoenix winning for Best Actor.
Phoenix is returning for the follow-up, as is Todd Phillips as both writer and director.
The recent news of Lady Gaga joining the cast, and the announcement of the release date, couldn’t come at a better time for the studio with the revelation that Batgirl was being shelved for a rumored tax write-off. With the success of the original film, it seems likely that this film won’t have much trouble making it to the finish line of being released.
Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on Oct. 4, 2024
