Upcoming Comics: December 20, 2022

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics!

Seems this week is the unofficial week of Dick Grayson, judging by solicits. I’m not complaining. Dick’s comics have had a consistent level of polish and care to them lately, like them or no – guess DC really learned their lesson after the whole Ric Grayson debacle (maybe). I’d say I’m somewhat excited for this week, if I weren’t infinitely more entertained by the Musk drama on Twitter. You can’t make this stuff up, seriously.

Now, here’s what we’ve got for this week:

Upcoming Comics

Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #7

DAWN OF THE DCU! The Great Darkness is defeated, but the final war has only just begun between the remaining heroes and Deathstroke’s Dark Army! Who will be left standing? The Justice League and the infinite Earths have returned, but at what cost? Do not miss the shocking conclusion that launches the DCU into 2023!

Pencils by Daniel Sampere, Jack Herbert, Rafa Sandoval and Giuseppe Camuncoli
Inks by Daniel Sampere, Jack Herbert, Rafa Sandoval. Daniel Henriques and Cam Smith
Colours by Alejandro Sanchez, Romulo Fajardo and Matt Herms
Cover Art by Daniel Sampere and Alejandro Sanchez

Thoughts: If you’re wondering what I thought of issue #6, I hated it. I’m gonna be pulling out all the stops for this final review – for my sake, more than anyone else’s. I want to feel like I really dove into why I think this book is so fundamentally flawed.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #10

The deadly duo of The Joker and the Key have twisted the increasingly powerful Boy Thunder into a walking time bomb of destructive power! Batman and Superman’s quest to guide young David toward the light takes an unexpected turn when the Teen Titans learn of the dark secret he’s been hiding from the World’s Finest duo! The Titans issue their ultimatum-tell Superman and Batman, or they will!

Written by Mark Waid
Pencils and Inks by Dan Mora
Colours by Tamra Bonvillain

Thoughts: God, do I hope McFarlane starts making DC figures in Mora’s style.

Nightwing #99

The Titans have been there for Nightwing, protecting Dick Grayson after he came out as a millionaire in Blüdhaven and wound up with a target on his back…but this time, his friends need Nightwing’s help to lead them through a crisis, placing Blüdhaven at the heart of it all!

Written by Tom Taylor
Pencils by Bruno Redondo
Inks by Bruno Redondo and Caio Filipe
Cover Art by Bruno Redondo

Thoughts: Yet another incredibly striking cover! Hate the description, though. “Came out as a millionare” is such a contrived phrase, and honestly a little inappropriate.

Batman: Urban Legends #22

All-star creator Jamal Campbell begins a two-part Nightwing story featuring new villain the Director, who films crime scenes. The Murder Club and the Court of Owls create a mystery too deep for Batman to solve as the Bat-Family crumbles. Arkham Academy gets a guest instructor who doesn’t care whether the students live or die. And in a story set in Gotham’s past, Anarky empowers the citizens of Gotham City with Batman’s tools.

Written by Joey Esposito, Dennis Culver, Jamal Campbell, and Yedoye Travis
Pencils and Inks by Jamal Campbell, Vasco Georgiev, Hayden Sherman and Lucas Silveira
Colours by Lucas Silveira, Adriano Lucas, Alex Guimarães and Jordie Bellaire
Cover Art by Jamal Campbell

Thoughts: One article I want to make – but don’t know if I have the energy for – is about how much I hate Urban Legends on principle. Short answer: the price locks out a lot of readers from knowing key things going on in the world of DC.

Batman vs. Robin #4

TOTAL ANNIHILATION! As the final battle erupts between Batman and Robin at the heart of Lazarus Island, a strange tremor rocks the combatants to their senses…This isn’t an island at all-it’s a volcano! With the Devil Nezha pulling the strings and unbelievable transformative power about to explode out into the world, our heroes have no choice but to do the unthinkable-fall back! A battle between father and son goes global as the Earth enters into the Lazarus Planet…

Written by Mark Waid
Pencils and Inks by Mahmud A. Asrar and Scott Godlewski
Colours by Jordie Bellaire
Cover Art by Mahmud A. Asrar and Nathan Fairbairn

Thoughts: Exciting stuff so far – Lazarus Planet might actually be an event that doesn’t make me ill!

Catwoman #50

Punchline and her Royal Flush gang are causing mayhem in Alleytown and things are blowing up-literally!-so Catwoman calls in backup! We all know the cat has nine lives, and the same can be said about her gang! But what’s a nine-person heist without a little danger, maybe some…death? And, uh-oh, those handcuffs definitely don’t look like the sexy kind, but what’s worse is Selina has bigger things to worry about right now: like her ex-lover and current lover in the same room! At least she’s criminally good at being bad!

Written by Tini Howard
Pencils and Inks by Nico Leon, Sami Basri, Juan E. Ferreyra and Inaki Miranda
Colours by Veronica Gandini
Cover Art by Jeff Dekal

Thoughts: Remember that wonderful period of time around 2015, where Catwoman was actually allowed to do something different?

GCPD: The Blue Wall #3

A high-profile criminal operation is foiled by the GCPD, and in the eyes of Commissioner Renee Montoya, there’s only one suspect worth investigating: the murderous gangster known as Two-Face. But every report appears to show that Harvey is back on the straight and narrow. Is the duplicitous former villain once again leading a double life? Or are ghosts from Renee’s past influencing her objective judgment?

Written by John Ridley
Pencils and Inks by Stefano Raffaele
Colours by Brad Anderson
Cover Art by Reiko Murakami

Thoughts: Eugh. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I hope Ridley’s aware of the history between these two.

DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #5

A greater chaotic force enters the battle, and in so doing threatens reality itself. As more heroes fall, and whole galaxies are lost, the most powerful forces across the cosmos must stop watching from the sidelines and finally act.

Written by Tom Taylor
Pencils by Trevor Hairsine and Neil Edwards
Inks by Neil Edwards and Andy Lanning
Colours by Rain Beredo
Cover Art by Howard Porter and Rain Beredo

Thoughts: Y’know, all this attention on Lobo is starting to make sense with some recent news about DC’s films…

DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War #6

The grand finale! With the dying embers of their hope rekindled at the eleventh hour, what’s left of John Constantine’s Suicide Squad attempts to traverse the badlands with precious cargo in tow. But just as final victory over the vampires and their endless night seems all but assured, the team must contend with their most powerful and terrifying enemy yet: Baron Cinder himself. In the backup, what happened to Poison Ivy when the world ended…?

Written by Matthew Rosenberg and Alex Paknadel
Pencils and Inks by Pasquale Qualano and Mirka Andolfo
Colours by Nicola Righi
Cover Art by Alan Quah

Thoughts: Put a gun to my head and I’d have told you this was from DCeased.

Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – Legion of Bats! #3

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, a.k.a. Harlivy, a.k.a. the DCU’s most favoritest couple. They’re inseparable, right? Right? Well, maybe not. While Ivy focuses on prepping for her new job with the Legion of Doom and Harley dives mallet-first into her role as a member of the Bat-Family, the DCU’s most favoritest couple find themselves stretched thin. But are they at their breaking point?

Titans United: Bloodpact #4

Conner Kent has been sentenced to death and there’s nothing the Titans can do…or is there? Hope is found on the battlefields of Europe as a weapon of Themyscira and the last son of Atlantis fight the forces of Ravenworld. Donna Troy is back, and she wants blood!

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat! Here you can see everything else that DC is releasing this week, beyond the scope of the books we cover on the website. God, at this point, why don’t we just cover everything?

Most Excited: Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #10. Something about these issues really ticks all my nostalgia boxes!

Least Excited: This is the final time I get to write Dark Crisis here!!! It’s almost over!

Wild Card: Batman vs. Robin #4 – in that I’m really not sure where this story is going, which I mean as a positive.

Best wishes, and see you in the reviews!
