Batman really lends himself to a lot of different storytelling genres, from street-level noir to tongue-in-cheek comedy. Given that he’s a mysterious creature of the night, you’d think there would be a lot more Batman horror stories out there. Sure, there have been plenty over the years, but it still seems to be an untapped well for more mainstream storytelling featuring the Dark Knight.
Enter: The Doom That Came to Gotham. Based on the miniseries of the same name from Mike Mignola, Richard Pace, Troy Nixey, and Dennis Janke, the upcoming film from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment adapts all of the comic’s Lovecraftian creepiness in high-definition animation. David Giuntoli– who voiced Batman in the underappreciated Batman: Soul of the Dragon— reprises the role of the Caped Crusader, and is joined by a solid cast that includes Patrick Fabian, Tati Gabrielle, David Dastmalchian, Jason Marsden, Tim Russ, and John Dimaggio.
While I didn’t love the comic book, there were lots of great ideas there, and seeing Batman go up against some truly otherworldly creatures could work great in an animated film. To get a taste of the horrors that are in store, check out the trailer below:
