Following a recent inadvertent confirmation, James Gunn has now officially confirmed he will be directing Superman: Legacy.

Gunn took to social media on Wednesday to officially announce the news, saying, “Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized.”

Gunn is also writing the film, a project that has been underway since before he was named as the co-chair of DC Studios.

Comic writer Tom King recently revealed on a podcast that Gunn would be directing the upcoming film, but the podcast was later pulled down for a re-edit taking out the mention.

No information has been revealed as of yet as to who will play Superman or what potential villains he will be facing off with.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
