The third-weekend numbers are in for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and the film has dropped out of the top five domestically.
As the third weekend of Shazam: Fury of the Gods draws to a close, the box office estimates have rolled in. Domestically the film took in $4.72 million.
For comparison, Shazam! third weekend was $16.46 million domestically, while Black Adam took in $18.27 million. The former went on to a domestic total of $140.37 million, while the latter took in $168.15 million. Shazam: Fury of the Gods now stands at $53.59 million.
Using the same comps as before, Shazam! took in $223.19 million from the foreign markets over the course of its run for a total of $363.56 million. Black Adam took in $223.1 million for a global total of $391.26 million. Shazam: Fury of the Gods now stands $119.59 million.
While the original Shazam! had a budget of $85 million, the sequel rose to $125 million which means it will need a minimum of $250 million globally to be considered profitable by the simplest of Hollywood math.
As to why the sequel is struggling, there are a lot of theories right now ranging from the fact it may be a dead-end story thanks to the new DC Universe that is being worked on, or it simply did not appeal to audiences. For its fourth weekend, the biggest competition will come from the opening The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods is now in wide theatrical release.
