James Mangold confirms he is writing Swamp Thing

James Mangold has made it official: He is writing the Swamp Thing movie.

It was announced on Friday that Mangold will be directing an upcoming Star Wars movie set 25,000 years in the past in a galaxy far, far away. Collider took the opportunity to ask him about the rumors he would be working on Swamp Thing as well.

It seems that the first race is on to who will direct the new DC projects that were announced by DC Studios on Tuesday. James Mangold is looking to direct Swamp Thing.

“The truth is, I’m writing both right now, and who knows what’s going to happen and what’s gonna blossom first or second?” Mangold went on to add, “So there’s your thing, I’m doing Swamp Thing, there’s your scoop. It’s not a rumour, it’s happening. I put it online.”

DC Studios co-chair James Gunn later confirmed the information, saying, “Of course when we started charting the course for the DCU one of the first people I talked to was the super talented [James Mangold] about writing and directing his passion project Swamp Thing.”

This won’t be his first foray into comic book territory. He famously directed the last Wolverine film, Logan, which was met with both fan and critical praise for its take on the final days of Marvel’s most famous mutant.

This will mark the fifth live-action take on Swamp Thing, and sixth overall. Previously there were two films released in 1982 and 1989. Two live-action TV series were released in 1990 and 2019. And there was one animated series that only had five episodes released in 1990. Which, if you have never seen its opening credits, you really need to.

No word on a release date for the Swamp Thing movie as of yet.
