During this week’s Anime Expo 2023, Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio unveil their new Suicide Squad based anime series called Suicide Squad Isekai. The story follows Batman foes Harley Quinn, The Joker, and other DC villains as they find themselves in a “violent fantasy world.” Of course, the word “Isekai” itself refers to the popular genre of “fish out of water” fiction taking place in a different world.
Some of the creative team include Hiroyuki Omori (Batman Ninja), Eri Osada, Tappei Nagatsuki, Eiji Umehara, Akira Amano and more! During the panel, attendees got to see several concept art images and a short preview announcement teaser drawn by Akira Amano (Psycho-Pass/ Reborn!). As of now, only the teaser was officially released alongside several statements from Anime Expo 2023 and the official website.
Outside of Harley Quinn, The Joker, and Amanda Waller, DC has yet to confirm the involvement of any specific Suicide Squad characters. Although, Director Eri Osada (Jujutsu Kaisen) hints that while she “can’t tell you” which characters will feature, “the villain [she] wanted to have appears” in the show. However, Harley’s design on the official poster curiously features buttons teasing the logos of Peacemaker, Deadshot, and The Joker. While Akira Amano’s statement on the official website about being a fan of Suicide Squad films, could indicate a preference to characters seen in the cinematic roster.
