LEGO Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City – First Impressions

It’s impossible to deny that LEGO has been kind to Batman fans. With over 120 sets, there’s something for just about every age group or type of Batman fan. One of the biggest sets yet–surpassed only by the Batcave Shadow Box set–is the new Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City set. It was ultimately too tantalizing to resist, and we picked up a set moments after it went up for order.

This is a massive set, with the box containing 4,210 pieces and weighing over 11 lbs (or 5 kilograms for the rest of the world aside from Myanmar and Liberia). The box contains 43 bags and two monstrous tomes of instructions. Rather than a fully three-dimensional set, we’re going to call this 2.5-dimensional. Perhaps the coolest part is that this set is designed to be hung on the wall and advertised as such. This isn’t a toy meant to take up precious floorspace in your home, but rather a piece of wall art that you build brick-by-brick.

The box showed up on Wednesday, April 3. We’re trying to pace ourselves–it’s not every day, year, or decade that you get a LEGO set representing something that’s been living in your brain for decades. While this piece is meant to act as wall art, it’s much more than that.

It’s a love letter from B:TAS fans to BTAS fans. We’ve only just started building the set–we’re eight bags into the 43-bag project–we’re already in love with it thanks to the huge list of Easter eggs in the set itself and in the instructions for it.

With the set now in our hands, we wanted to give you a preview of what to expect, as well as whetting your appetite for at least a couple of additional installments as we build this incredibly cool set.

For now, enjoy the world’s smolest Batmobile:
